Any strategies for tracking user flow which leads to exception?

Jul 12, 2013 at 11:10 PM
This is more of a question about how to use Google Analytics, but I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to determine a specific user's path to cause an exception?

For example:
User A runs app, visits page a, visits page b, visits page c, exits (no exception)

User B runs app, visits page a, visits page c, encounters exception.

How can I identify that the exception is dependent on the user skipping page b?

GA supports Goals and Funnels, but only on views and events? Not exceptions.

I will try setting up a custom "page" on thrown exceptions to see if that helps.

Hopefully GA will eventually add support for this displaying paths to exceptions; the info is tracked but AFAIK, they don't offer a way to visualize it in their UI. You might want to post a suggestion on the GA dev forum. -- maybe someone using GA for iOS or Android will offer a suggestion since they should have the same limitation.

The only thing I can think of is as you already noted: to create custom events or pages instead. Note: the page wouldn't have to be a real page and could just as easily be fake.
